I think Joni Mitchell put it best ??you don?t know what you?ve got till it?s gone.? With shutters it seems the opposite is true, you didn?t know it was missing until it was there. A lot of homes and businesses do not have shutters on their windows and they may look just fine. But if you take that same home or business and add some shutters; WOW, not only the windows but the whole house just ?pops? more. Adding shutters can be the simple and fairly inexpensive face lift your fa?ade is screaming for.

Today shutters come in a wide variety of materials that range from no maintenance to no time for anything but maintenance. You will also want to consider whether you want non-functional decorative pieces, operational (on working hinges but not meant for any manner of protection), or fully functional. Below you will find a few material options that are currently favored with home buyers.

Vinyl:

Vinyl is an excellent to very low maintenance option, and many brands offer a lifetime or 40 year warranty (in the U.S. a lifetime warranty is actual only binding for 40 years). The warranty is usually against product defect and fading. Pre-colored offer you no maintenance other than cleaning. A paintable option can be chosen as well, but your time spent maintaining them may vary by the paint grade used. Vinyl shutters are almost always non-functional and for decoration only.

Polyurethane:

Polyurethane is a low maintenance option in that it does not rot and insects leave it alone, but it does require painting from time to time. The darker the color the more maintenance will be involved; of course this also depends upon the quality of paint used.

These too are for decoration only.

Wood:

Wood shutters tend to require the most maintenance. These can be found in operational and fully functional. They require painting more often and are forever prone to rotting. Then one needs to consider those big yellow carpenter bees coming to visit for the spring and summer. Wood shutters are often thought of to be the standard of beauty, and just like with everything else it usually means a pricier option as well.

Composite:

As compromise to regular wood there are wood composite shutters, made by binding wood fibers, strands and particles. They tend to last longer than full wood shutters, and usually come pre-painted with a color guarantee of up to 10 years. While they are operational they are not typically functional.

Aluminum:

A fourth option is Aluminum, strictly speaking as a decorative shutter they seem to be fading into the past. They were most often used on mobile homes, but the pre-fab housing builders seem to have switched to vinyl long ago. . I?ve been hard pressed to find any more than a small handful of sizes, and pre-made colors are very limited. What I?ve seen in use has became noticeably chipped and scratched over the years.

Like with any good facelift, it should look better but not over done. Different accessory pieces are available, but not always necessary. Things like S hooks and hinges can give an authentic look to completely non-functional shutters. Usually made with a ?wrought iron? look they tend to fade into a darker color shutters, but really pop on lighter shades. For something like a composite or wood shutter that has the option to move, necessary hardware would include pintels, hinges, slide bolts and S hooks, which are available in various styles.
If you mean for your shutters to operate they would definitely be required.

So if it?s time to do some updating for curb appeal, to stand out from the neighbors, alleviate fa?ade boredom, and add property value or to create some warmth and charm think shutters; the facelift you?ll be proud to admit to.

Do-it-yourself plantation shutters are semi-opaque window coverings that normally hinge on either side of a window opening. These shutters are relatively attractive to end users looking to not only improve the appearance of a room, but also enjoy controlled access to light.

Do-it-yourself plantation shutters can come with louvers (horizontal and vertical slats) as small as 1 7/8-inch to 5 ? -inch. The average sizes for interior plantation shutters include 2 ?, 3, 3 ?, or 4 ?-inch movable louvers and comes in elliptical and flat options. An elliptical louver is thicker in the center and tapers to the front and back. It is considered a more durable alternative to the flat louver. Usually, when getting plantation shutter kits, manufacturers rely on an elliptical louver. It is noteworthy to keep in mind that plantation panels are normally 1 1/8-inch thick ? anything narrower is discouraged.

When looking through the many styles of plantation shutters, a collection of factors will influence your ultimate decision. The louver width, shutter size and color will all play an important role. For a more fine look, the shutters should have a narrow width louver, while a more traditional look comes with wider louvers. While the most in vogue color of shutters is oak or white, more customers are dabbling with the colors beige, gray, black, grayish green and cherry.

Nowadays, an expanding number of developers are producing homes with enormous rooms and open windows, making plantation shutters a fashionable option in window coverings. This category of shutter is more current than traditional options. The ability to darken a room and enjoy privacy makes this type of shutter is big plus. The flexibility of do-it-yourself plantation shutters continues to impress, as they are used to spruce up kitchens, kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms and even dining rooms.

One of the biggest reasons that a homeowner outfits their household with plantation shutters is to improve the general appearance of their house. The shutters have a way of creating a more refined look. Another popular draw behind installing do-it-yourself plantation shutters is to obtain the capacity to adjust the amount of light in a room. With the easy adjustment of the louvers, a great amount of light may enter the room just as easily as allowing only a small amount.

Moreover, plantation shutters are much different than curtains or blinds, as they do not come with the gaps that allow light to seep through when closed. Once plantation shutters are closed, not only is light kept out, but also noises taking place outside of the home. While curtains may fade and become soiled, shutters require a low level of maintenance, with uncomplicated dusting to revamp their appearance.

When considering the pros and disadvantages between window treatments and plantation shutters, it is important to note the initial cost of shutters. The average price of do-it-yourself plantation shutters is a possible disadvantage that many end users face.

The price of plantation shutters is normally based upon a per square meter system. Keep in mind that elliptical widths often cost more per square meter than the flat blade. Calculating the cost of do-it-yourself plantation shutters involves the width and drop of window dimensions. To come to a base price for a kit, multiply the width and drop to assess the total square meters. Although the overall cost of plantation shutter kits is sometimes a setback, the long-lasting qualities are well worth the investment.

A few sample costs include caf? (or single) golden oak shutters measuring 34 ? inches wide and 50 inches tall for $386, while double hung pure white shutters measuring 44 ? inches wide and 24 inches tall may cost around $246. Also, remember that the hardware coupled with plantation shutter kits are sometimes bought separately, such as the hinges and magnets that keep the unit steady.

Much has been debated about the use of a camera phone in respect to privacy and copyright violations against its great utilities. To fuel these debates further, Sony Ericsson have came up with their latest model ? K800i. The Sony Ericsson K800i is not a just camera-phone, it is a camera and a phone. The classic candy-bar form in a dark case, the 262k colors TFT display with a lens cover on the back looks simple and therefore very sophisticated.

First thing first. The Sony Ericsson K800i features a 3.2 mega pixel camera build from CMOS-technology. An ordinary LED will not do justice to the great camera, so the manufacturers could only settle for a full-fledged impulsive xenon flash. Other than ‘basic’ features like 16x digital zoom and special effects, the Sony Ericsson K800i features ‘BestPic’ ? that takes four pictures before and four after you click a shot so that you get the best possible frame. The device also gives you the option to compromise the quality of photos to save on memory. But with an expandable memory slot, you probably won’t give a second thought to it. The camera have three modes ? Macro, Infinity and Automatic so that you get exactly what you are looking for while taking the picture. The K800i includes an improved version of the gallery and a Picture Editor.

The Sony Ericsson K800i supports tri band GSM an UMTS networks. The phone supports 3G technology. The device also have ’slower’ Internet through GPRS. Net surfing is with the extremely easy Access NetFront browser. The phone also supports RSS Feeds to stream in live television feeds. All these connectivity tools are topped up with Blue tooth, Infrared and USB connectivity. The shutterbug not only clicks, it rocks too. The Sony Ericsson K800i has an integrated Media Player with ‘Walkman’ features like Mega Bass. Enjoy your music while you read texts transmitted by the radio station with the FM Radio with RDS. If you’re looking for a camera phone with high functionality in all other fields, look no further than the Sony Ericsson K800i.

The ever expanding mobile world has been experiencing substantial changes in a real quick time. Although, the leading mobile handsets manufacturers are piling up the already congested mobile market, but that’s really a great sign for a common mobile phone user. The new handsets are not only cool in designing, but they are more compact and offers a lot with innumerable features ? the race goes on and on for the betterment. Every time a new handset is released, you would find numerous reviews and all these exaggerated things contribute well to create a huge hype and then you got all the analytical details about a mobile phone before taking the final decision. Of late, Sony Ericsson released its much awaited camera phone, the Sony Ericsson K750i, which also received a grand reception with mixed reviews.

The most fascinating aspect of the Sony Ericsson K750i is its 2-megapixel camera, which is very well supported by its auto focus system, which is further complemented by its macro mode shooting. As such, its camera is quite easy to use, as all you got to do is to slide the lens cover to one side and your camera is on to capture all those defined moments, you always want to grab. The overall designing has been performed in such as way that you can easily hold the handset sideways, just like a digital camera and a dedicated camera button paves the way for easy clicking. Moreover, there is a double LED flash unit to add much needed clarity in your photographs. After clicking, you can store all these photographs in is 34MB of internal memory and if it that is not good enough then, it also comes with a 64MB Memory Stick Duo to provide that additional space.

However, the camera features are the main attractions of the Sony Ericsson K750i, but you have got various other functionalities to elevate your mobile experience. For music, you can make the most with its MP3 player and radio. Its radio is further supported by 20 presets and it also comes with RDS support to provide you much needed information about the radio station. As far as music output is concerned, it is good, but you just cannot compare it with Sony Ericsson’s music dedicated Walkman series. In additional features, you get Web and WAP browsing with e-mail management, USB cable and Java support. Clearly, the Sony Ericsson K750i scores quite well in the range of middle size phones without boasting about anything.

Shutter speed is perhaps the most creative adjustment available to the digital photographer. It allows us to freeze action or use motion blur to create a variety of effects, and is expressed in seconds or fractions of seconds depending on the length of exposure.

A high shutter speed (1/1000 of a second or higher) can freeze even very fast moving objects dead in their tracks. However, you will need to keep a couple of things in mind:

1.) You are going to need a brightly lit subject as shutter speeds this high don?t allow your camera much time to gather light for exposure. You can get around this to a degree by using a higher ISO setting, but don?t go to high, or noise will creep into your shot.

2.) If possible, set up your shot by having your camera focused on the spot where your subject is going to pass by. This will allow you to concentrate on timing your subject?s approach, giving you a better chance to trip the shutter at just the right moment.

Medium shutter speeds (1/20 of a second to 1/80 of a second) can be used to create motion blur when photographing moving objects. This gives the photo a sense of life and motion. Here are several ways you can approach this type of motion blur:

1.) With your camera stationary, trip the shutter as a moving subject passes by. This will make the subject look blurred, while keeping the rest of the shot clear?giving your subject a look of speed and a sense that it is moving out of the shot.

2.) Follow your subject through the viewfinder in a smooth sweeping motion as it approaches, and trip the shutter as your subject goes by?this is called ?panning.? This method will keep your subject relatively clear, but will blur the background, giving an overall sense of speed and movement. The timing for this type of shot takes a little practice, but the results make it well worthwhile.

3.) When shooting a stationary subject, purposely move your camera in a sweeping or circular motion to create a blur of colours and lines. This one is a lot of fun and can provide some interesting abstract results.

Low shutter speeds (1/8 of a second up to 30 seconds and beyond) can be used to create a variety of effects?here are just a few:

Note: For most of these long exposures a tripod or some other means of keeping the camera perfectly still is necessary to avoid creating unintended blur.

1.) Moving water will look smooth and silky when shot at shutter speeds of 1/8 of a second or more?the longer the exposure the more pronounced the effect.

2.) When photographed at shutter speeds of 2 seconds or greater, car lights will turn into long colourful trails?the longer the exposure, the longer the trails.

3.) When very long exposures are used (15 seconds plus) city lights will often take on a stretched, star-like appearance.

4.) Photographing city lights at shutter speeds of 1/15 of a second, or so, either from a moving vehicle, or while walking, can produce interesting and colourful abstracts (no tripod needed.)

Most digital cameras have a shutter speed priority setting, which allows you to control the shutter speed?try it?it can open up a whole new world, and its loads of fun to boot.

I?m sure you know that one of the most important key elements to getting beautifully clear and artistic photos is firstly knowing and having a sense of the artistic. Next I?ll tell you what you need in order to take these skills so you can refine your digital photography. The secret really is, combining your natural artistic flare with some precise technical knowledge?explained in laymen?s terms. No baffling or confusion here, ever. So I?m going to start you off with some good, solid tips about shutter speed, aperture, exposure, how blur can work well (not the accidental type!) and what camera you can use to get goods results in your digital photography.

Shutter speed is one of the first things in digital photography that you must know if you want to excel your skills and get beautiful digital photos. Your shutter speed controls the amount of light coming in to the digital sensor. The speed at with you get your light exposure can really make or break your digital photography.

Your shutter speeds are defined or measured as F stops. You will see this written as either ?f stop? or hyphenated as ?f-stop.? Either way it means the same. The shutter speed exposure of your camera is ?The speed of the rotation of the shutter inside the lens, measured in rotations per second?. Okay, that?s very nice but what does that mean in your digital photography?

In basic terms to help you understand, shutter speed controls light exposure. It means that whatever F stop you have your digital camera on will control the amount of light coming in to the camera and make your pictures brighter or darker. Shutter speeds can impact the clarity of a moving object for example. You can create shutter speeds that are fast or shutter speed that gives a freeze on the motion of the object such as a moving car.

For example a good ?freeze motion? shot where something looks suspended in time, may be at a shutter speed of 1/2000. That means the shutter has opened and closed so fast that you can?t replicate it in sound or description. The shutter has clicked in 2000th of a second. That?s how a lot of sports photography is done. Many subjects that move around and when you want to create this effect with can look really good with a fast shutter speed.

Shutter speeds of babies and kids for example have to be taken pretty fast?.unless they?re asleep of course. You need a pretty high shutter speed of babies and kids because in photographic terms they move around so fast! I?ve never been more tired after a day of shooting photos of kids and babies. You have to be on your toes because a potentially great photo is gone in an instant of a second, so you have to watch them like a hawk.

On the other hand you can get blurry images using shutter speed effects manipulation. Shutter speeds and blur can work quite nicely together. For example if you want to create that artistic blue look, not the accidental smudge look then some gentle blur in your photos can look beautiful. This involves some adjusting of the shutter speed to get the right look for your shot.

Take for example two different situations. One is of children playing or running. If you wanted to ?suspend? the motion then you would perhaps set the shutter speed to an f stop of 1/500 or 1/1000 for example. (What you set the shutter speed at depends on how much light you have to work with.)

The next example is of creating the nice artistic blur. You may take the same photo of the kids running, but set the shutter speed exposure to something around the 1/250 for example. This range of f stops may create a really nice, soft blur with these shutter speed effects.

Shutter speed and aperture in your digital photography must work together closely to create the right blend of effect in your photo. So just try it. Play around with moving objects on different shutter speeds and you?ll see what I mean about the different types of effects you can get.

So what digital cameras can you do this with?

Slr?s. It?s a little hard to do this with an ordinary point-and shoot- digital camera because you can?t control the shutter speed independently. On a prosumer camera it?s better because you can change the exposure value, but still, you can?t change the shutter speed alone. However if you do have one changing the exposure value or ?e/v? as we call it is better than nothing. You can still experiment pretty well if you have one of these digital cameras. However a single lens reflex digital camera is the ideal. It allows you to control the shutter speed alone, independently, without affecting the adjustment of the aperture.

To summarise, you can get beautifully artistic shots by having a sense of what works intuitively, then couple that with a good sense of photographic technical knowledge and you are well on your way! So start with playing around with the shutter speeds first and then move on to aperture, then try both. You?ll see some pretty interesting stuff I can assure you.

Happy shooting!

Plantation shutters can add a unique look to any home. Historically, they were used for protection against the elements, as well as against intruders, but in recent times, have been used to make more of a design statement. But what are they?

They?re window shutters that mount inside or outside a window, and feature adjustable louvers for independent regulation of light emission as well as climate control. They can act as a barrier for drafts from cracks around the windows.

They can be used singly, or across an entire bank of windows, which looks especially nice. Sometimes several shutters are hinged together to cover an exceptionally large window. Generally, you?ll see that in a commercial setting, such as a restaurant with a patio, but sometimes you?ll see it in homes with large openings to decorate.

Hurricane shutters are popular in areas susceptible to hurricane activity. They?re more for protection against flying debris and broken glass.

There is nothing like the warm, rich look of real wood shutters, but sometimes wood isn?t practical, either from a logistics standpoint or a financial standpoint. Shutters can be used anywhere, from living rooms, to dining rooms, to kitchens, to bathrooms. If they?re made of wood, they should be kept from moisture, as they can crack, swell or warp. This means they?re not the best choice for bathrooms, kitchens, or near hot tubs or Jacuzzis. However, many types of faux wood are available, which are made of materials that won?t warp.

Installing shutters can be a simple home repair and improvement project even for those not comfortable with this sort of thing. If desired, you can call a local professional to install them for you. If you choose to tackle the project yourself, allow about an hour per window for installation. Here are some tips to installing your own plantation shutters:

1) Make sure you know the measurements of the window. Check the dimensions of the window so you can determine that its angles are correct. Unlike a soft window covering, which can be moved to cover bad angles, windows that are being prepared to accept shutters need to be square. If they?re not, the shutters will need to be adjusted to fit.

2) If you need to cut the shutters to fit, cut it slightly larger than the opening.?

3) Use two hinges for shutters 30 inches or less in height. Use three hinges if your shutters fall between 30 to 48 inches. Install hinges on the opposite side of the shutter opening.

4) Install the latch. Take into consideration who will be using this shutter. If small children have access to it, consider installing the latch out of their reach.

Shutters have come a long way from being a measure of protection. Now they just offer a new way to decorate one?s home.
